RESUMEN: La figura del monstruo y su monstruosidad constituyen uno de los pilares básicos de la ficción gótica. Vampiros y hombres lobo han sido usados para representar al Otro amenazante de una manera abiertamente física, identificando así al sujeto colonial como la principal amenaza de la sociedad civilizada británica. Sin embargo, esta amenaza adquirió, en manifestaciones posteriores del género, un carácter más psicológico, de manera que los hombres lobo fueron sustituidos por un miedo psicológico. En Irlanda, dicho cambio supuso un paso más.
